One Motor, One Touchscreen: A-dec and Dentsply Sirona's Integration Adds a New Touchpoint

What's actually changing

On February 19, 2026, A-dec and Dentsply Sirona announced that the Dentsply Sirona Midwest Motor System is being built directly into the A-dec 500 Pro and A-dec 300 Pro delivery units. It is available from Q1 2026 through selected dealers, as a factory-installed option on new units and as a retrofit kit for delivery systems already in the operatory. Availability varies by country.

The integration combines four functions that used to sit in separate tabletop boxes: restorative handpiece control, an endodontic motor with preloaded WaveOne and Reciproc file libraries, an integrated apex locator, and an implant motor with a built-in peristaltic pump and preloaded implant libraries. All four are run from one touchscreen on the delivery unit and one shared foot control. The system sits on A-dec's A-dec+ software platform, which pushes library and protocol updates to the unit without a hardware swap.

Why this is a barrier-protocol question, not just an equipment upgrade

When restorative, endo, and implant motors were separate devices, each one had its own housing, its own cable, and — for most practices — its own line in the barrier checklist. An endo motor might get wrapped for a root canal and left alone the rest of the week. An implant motor's irrigation line was a well-understood single-use item ordered specifically for surgery days.

Consolidating those functions into one touchscreen and one foot control changes the exposure pattern. The panel and the pedal are no longer used for one procedure type on one type of day — they are touched during every restorative filling, every endo case, and every implant placement that comes through that operatory. A surface that used to see occasional contact now sees it constantly, across patients with very different procedures and very different aerosol and glove-contact profiles.

Retrofit kits raise a second, more immediate issue: the barrier map a practice already has for its A-dec 500 Pro or 300 Pro was drawn for the delivery unit as it existed before the kit went in. The day the Midwest Motor System is retrofitted, that map is out of date — there's a new touchscreen and, depending on the kit, a repositioned foot control, neither of which existed in the previous protocol.

What to check before the retrofit — or before day one on a new unit

1. Add the integrated touchscreen to the surface disinfection and barrier list explicitly. Don't assume it's covered by whatever protocol applied to the old standalone endo or implant motor housing — this panel is now used on restorative cases too.

1. Confirm barrier fit against the new panel geometry. A retrofit kit changes the physical footprint of the control area; a sleeve or cover sized for the previous console may not seat the same way on the new one.

1. Source single-use irrigation tubing for the built-in peristaltic pump before the first implant case on the new system. The pump is now part of the delivery unit rather than a separate physiodispenser, but the line still needs to be single-use and matched to the pump.

1. Treat the shared foot control as a between-procedure touchpoint, not just a between-patient one. If a clinician moves from a restorative step to activating the apex locator within the same visit, the pedal has already changed hands and gloves in between.

1. Update training material and checklists at the point the retrofit is installed, not at the next scheduled review — the gap between installation and protocol update is exactly when a new touchpoint gets missed.

None of this changes what the Midwest Motor System does clinically. It changes where staff put their hands during a normal week, and that's the part a barrier protocol has to catch up to before the first patient sits down after installation.
